Why You Should Consider Making Your Own Spice Blends
Homemade seasoning mixes are so amazing because they:
- Save you money (some spice blends are 10+ dollars!)
- Taste amazing!
- Are fully customizable to whatever ingredients you prefer (or dont!)
- Can be low sodium if you desire
- Skip all of the preservatives that can be found in traditional spice blends
Below are three of my favourite spice mixes: Everything Bagel Seasoning, Taco Seasoning, and Seasoning Salt. I’ll share how I use each one, storage tips, and ideas for getting creative in the kitchen.
1. Everything Bagel Seasoning
This everything bagel seasoning is honestly amazing and not just for bagels. Use it for breakfast, snacks and even dinner! It comes together in a couple minutes using pantry staples you probably have on hand already. Making it yourself means you can decide if it needs more or less of an ingredient or add a pinch of chilli flakes to make it spicy!
Practical Ways to use everything bagel seasoning:
- Of course on top of bagels or on the cream cheese in a bagel
- On top of fried, scrambled or omelette eggs
- On top of toast (avocado toast is amazing too!)
- On any savoury dish where a pop of flavour and crunch could benefit it (stir fry in particular!)
- On top of popcorn
Pro Tips:
- Toast your sesame seeds lightly for an extra nutty flavour.
- Shake the jar before each use to redistribute ingredients.
2. Taco Seasoning
Taco seasoning is what really got me into making my own seasoning blends. The first time I made my spice blend I was HOOKED. Seriously the best taco seasoning I had ever made. I know you will love it too!
Practical ways to use taco seasoning
- In tacos with ground beef
- To season chicken for fajitas or nachos
- For burrito bowls
- On top of popcorn
- For breakfast tacos
Pro Tips:
Double the batch and store in a jar. There is an option to make it in bulk on the blog post. It’s a weeknight lifesaver.
Adjust chilli powder or red pepper flakes depending on your heat tolerance.
Mix with a little olive oil and lime juice for a quick taco marinade.
3. Seasoning Salt
When I made seasoning salt for the first time, I fully anticipated my kiddos to snub their nose at it. To my surprise, they LOVED it! They started asking for it on their rice, raw veg and anything else I fed them. If you have picky kids who don’t always love strong flavours, this may be your soft entry point!
Practical ways to use seasoning salt:
- Any time you need to use salt in a savoury dish
- On top of eggs as a finishing salt
- Any potato dish
- On top of popcorn
- To season rice (this is especially true for kids!)
- On raw mixed vegetables
- On cooked mixed vegetables
Pro Tips:
- Customize with smoked paprika, garlic, or onion powder for unique variations.
- Use fine kosher salt for easier mixing and even coating.
- A little goes a long way… start with a small sprinkle and taste as you go.
