Homemade everything bagel seasoning isn’t just for bagels (although it is AMAZING on homemade bagels.) This multi purpose spice is wonderful on avocado toast, eggs, popcorn or most other savoury dishes.
Once you start sprinkling it on your food, you will wonder why you ever bought it in the first place!
Store bought versions are filled with preservatives and honestly don’t taste nearly as good. If you make your own DIY seasoning blends, you control the ingredients and how much of each goes into your recipes.
You can also make this everything bagel seasoning blend for a fraction of the cost which is so necessary in this economy! Let’s dive in to the recipe.

Why You Should Make Your Own Everything Bagel Seasoning at Home
There are so many reasons you should consider making your own spice blends.
- You control the ingredients. Don’t like one of the spices? Leave it out! Allergic to sesame? Don’t add the seeds. Need a lower sodium diet? Use low sodium salt or omit entirely.
- The cost goes way down, especially if you make your own garlic or onion powder. To learn how to do that, click here.
- You skip all of the preservatives and know exactly what you are feeding your family. This is increasingly important as we move towards packaged foods…
Ingredients for Homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning
4 tsp white sesame seeds
2 tsp black sesame seeds (sub white if you are unable to find black)
2 tsp poppy seeds
2 tsp onion flakes (can sub onion powder for a finer spice blend)
2 tsp garlic flakes (can sub for garlic powder)
1 tsp flaky or regular salt (I usually use regular as I don’t like large chunks of salt)
1 tsp sugar (don’t skip this. It is the surprise magic ingredient)
How to Make the Spice Blend
- Combine all of the spices into a small mason jar (“For Jars” make the best canning jars ever!)
- Give it a shake and store it airtight in a cool, dark place until you are ready to use it!

Around 6-12 months if stored airtight and in a cool, dark place.
