Did you know taco seasoning is incredibly easy to make? It takes only a handful of pantry staples and can be whipped up in less than 5 minutes. This taco seasoning is full of flavour and is one of the best recipes I have ever created.

I’m not sure what it is about store bought taco seasoning but I always walk away with the most ridiculous heartburn. I also find that to get any sort of flavour into your taco meat, you have to add at least 2 packages and it feels like a waste!

If you are ready to try making your own, I guarantee you will never go back! Let’s get into it!

If you love recipes like this...

If you love having homemade taco seasoning ready to go, this is just one small piece of how I simplify meals from scratch. I keep dozens of pantry mixes pre-made so dinner is faster, cheaper, and made with ingredients I actually trust.

Why should I make my own taco seasoning?

Besides the obvious things like being fully customizable or knowing what ingredients you are putting into your food, there are a few other reasons I think you should consider making this taco seasoning.

  1. It is an instant crowd pleaser. Whenever I need to feed people beyond my immediate family, I turn to tacos. They can be made with whatever ingredients you have and in bulk (the best is using a crockpot for the meat!) Everyone likes tacos and you can do a mix of hard and soft shell tacos. Bonus points for being able to use the leftover meat for nachos or taco pizza!
  2. The flavour is out of this world! Seriously, the first time I tried this taco seasoning, I fell in love. I knew I didn’t want to go back to store bought (plus the ingredients in store bought are not always great with artificial colours and flavours!)
  3. This is the perfect gifting recipe! Know someone who has had a baby? Send them a taco dinner complete with all of the ingredients and some of this homemade seasoning. It is sure to be a welcomed surprise! Be sure to add one of these gifting labels so they can ensure the ingredients line up with any dietary restrictions. It also look beautiful!!

What ingredients do I need to make my own taco seasoning?

This taco seasoning recipe only uses a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand. When you look at the ingredients, it may seem overwhelming but these are all very basic ingredients and you can pull out one measuring spoon and call it perfect! Lets go over what ingredients you will need.

Chili Powder

Cumin

Garlic Powder

Paprika

Brown Sugar

Corn Starch

Oregano

Onion Powder

Salt

Pepper

The taco seasoning recipe

This taco seasoning recipe is enough to replace one package of store bought taco seasoning. You can scale it up depending if you want to have this for a bulk prep. I will give you those proportions after as well.

1 Tbsp chili powder

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp brown sugar

1 tsp corn starch

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp oregano

1/4 tsp pepper

Add all of the ingredients to a bowl, or even directly into your cooked beef and give it a mix to combine. Store it airtight until you are ready to use. I like to store my spice mixes in mason jars as they are cheap and look so cute!

When you are ready to cook your taco beef, brown the beef and then add your spices along with 1/4 cup water (the corn starch will thicken your beef like a store bought variety will.)

If you love baking mixes from scratch...

This taco seasoning is one of my most-used mixes, but it’s far from the only one I rely on.

In my Pantry Staples Ebook, I share all of the dry mixes I keep stocked so meals come together quickly without relying on store-bought packets.

What if I want to make this taco spice in bulk?

That is the beauty of making your own seasoning mixes. You get to decide how much you make at a time. I am also a huge advocate of reusing what you have so if you have ever gone to Costco or another bulk store and purchased taco seasoning, you can reuse the container so you keep your spices organized.

Let’s move onto the bulk recipe. This recipe will fill a pint size mason jar which will give you 12 packages (or pounds of beef worth) of seasoning.

3/4 cup chili powder

1/4 cup cumin

1/4 cup garlic powder

1/4 cup paprika

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup corn starch

1/4 cup onion powder

1/4 cup salt

2 Tbsp salt

1 Tbsp pepper

Mix it together in a bowl until it is fully combined and then transfer it over to your jar. I like to use a canning funnel to avoid large spills. When you are ready to use it, spoon 3-4 tbsp of the mix into your ground beef.

Other than ground beef, how else can I use this taco seasoning?

You can use this taco seasoning on so many things!

  • On chicken for fajita night.
  • In mayo for a zesty taco mayo dip/ sauce.
  • In a taco bake or casserole.
  • On top of popcorn for a nacho flavour.

This is just the start of the possibilities! I encourage you to make it and test out spice in any recipe your heart calls you to try.
