BBQ season is right around the corner and as we inch closer, I can’t help but plan for all of the BBQ recipes we are going to devour. I love a good piece of BBQ meat with grilled corn on the cobb and potato salad. This BBQ seasoning recipe is going to help you elevate your BBQ cookouts.

BBQ seasoning

This BBQ seasoning recipe captures all the best parts of summer in a jar and can be used in so many different ways. A few of the ways I like to use this BBQ seasoning.

  1. As a rub on meat. I love a good steak bowl and this rub captures the sweet and smoky flavours incredibly well.
  2. In rice for a BBQ style smokey rice recipe. When I tell you that you just have to trust the process on this one, I mean it. More on this below!
  3. As a seasoning in a mayo style sauce or any other sauce mix you can think of. As I mentioned above, in my steak bowls, I will use this BBQ seasoning as the rub for the steak, in the rice for the base and in the sauce I make for the top. This seasoning is so incredibly versatile! Let’s get into the actual recipe!

The BBQ Seasoning Recipe

This seasoning mix is very straightforward and uses ingredients you likely have on hand already. This recipe will fill a small, 125ml mason jar which will season 2 cups of rice (more on that below) or be the perfect amount of rub for 2-3 good sized steaks.

To get started, you will need an airtight container to store it in. I use mason jars with these baking tags (free download below for this bbq seasoning plus 4 other recipes!)

1/4 cup brown sugar

2 Tbsp paprika

1/2 Tbsp chili powder

1/2 Tbsp onion powder

1/2 Tbsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp Salt

1/2 tsp pepper

*Optional: 1 tsp dry mustard powder

Add all of the ingredients into the mason jar and give it a good shake. It is ready to use! Let’s move on to using this seasoning mix in rice recipes.

BBQ Style Rice Recipe

This BBQ seasoning is addicting in rice. The flavour is rich and slightly smokey with a hint of sweet. It goes great along side BBQ meats or as the base of any rice bowl. This recipe does not disappoint.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of rice
  • 1 serving of the BBQ seasoning mix (one serving is the full recipe above. Trust the process.)
  • 3 cups of water for cooking

To make it, add 2 cups of rice (I use jasmine but any kind will do) and rinse as normal. Add your water to the rice along with the full spice mix, stir to combine and then cover.

Place on the stove over medium low heat and allow it to cook until all of the liquid is gone and the rice looks fluffy, being sure not to take the lid off at any point before it is ready.

This process takes 15-20 minutes and always yields delightful rice.

Serve as usual with whatever recipe you want to make and you are ready to go!

Creamy BBQ Style Sauce Recipe

This creamy BBQ style sauce may sound strange but it is amazing. This sauce is just another way you can use this BBQ seasoning mix and this sauce goes amazing on anything.

A few ways I have used this sauce…

As a topping for my smokey rice bowl

As the sauce for pasta or potato salad

As a dip for pizza

As a dip for veggies

As a dip for fries

Anywhere a creamy sauce would balance flavours or be a nice addition. If you think it might taste good, you are probably right!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup mayo (you can easily make your own! The recipe is in my pantry mix ebook down below along with over 70 other dry mix recipes!)

1 Tbsp BBQ spice mix

1-2 tsp lemon juice depending on how tangy you like your sauce

1 tbsp water to thin it out (this is optional but I do like to thin my sauce if i’m drizzling it over a bowl.)

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and you are ready to use it! If you want to store it, make sure you do so airtight and in the fridge. It will last for 3 ish days before it starts to congeal and get unappetizing.
