Magic erasers are one of those items that come in handy quite often when you have kids. Unfortunately, they are so expensive and contain fragrance which is something I try to avoid.
What if you could make your own DIY magic erasers that were low toxic, and only costed you pennies? You can!
Let’s dive into it.
I was skeptical about these DIY magic erasers at first too but the first time I tried them, I was hooked!
Now, anytime you make your own DIY cleaners or products, it is going to be different from the original. This isn’t a bad thing! I will walk you through all of the steps to ensure you have a great experience making your own homemade magic erasers.

What materials do you need to make these DIY magic erasers?
You really only need 3 materials to make this recipe.
- A bowl to mix your solution
- Measuring cups and spoons (you could even use a measuring spoon to stir if you want!)
- A cloth, sponge or other item you wish to use to clean with. I like to use my hand crochet cloth for this but you could use a regular sponge or you can use a melamine sponge that has the same texture as a regular magic eraser sponge.
I have not tried this magic eraser solution with a melamine sponge as it works well using a cloth but if you have a tough stain, you might want to try one out.
What ingredients do you need?
Once again you only require 3 ingredients!
- Water- this one is easy! I tend to use filtered water but I don’t see why tap water wouldn’t work.
- Baking soda- there are so many uses to baking soda from baking, to deodorizing and cleaning! I always stock up at Costco in bulk.
- Borax- If you have never needed borax, it may feel like a waste to buy for one recipe, however you can clean your bathrooms, use it in your laundry, to clean off dirt and grime, strip your clothing (this was all the rage in 2020) and to make slime! There are a lot of uses so I always keep a box on hand.
The homemade magic eraser recipe
- 2-3 tbsp warm water
- 1 tbsp borax powder
- 1 tbsp baking soda
Combine all of the ingredients into a bowl and stir to combine. This should be a thin paste. It is ready to use!
*Note: I have tried to make this with more water and no matter how much I stirred, I could not get it to dissolve. I prefer to make a paste which also offers a bit more abrasion and use a wet cloth with it instead.
*Note 2: This is not a recipe that you can store long term so making a small batch like this is perfect! Use the leftovers to clean your toilet or any other grubby spots in your house!
How do you use the magic eraser paste?
As I mentioned above, you can make a liquid solution but it takes forever for the borax and baking soda to dissolve and I don’t always have that kind of patience so I prefer the paste.
- Instead, I take the cloth that I am using, wet it and wring it out leaving some moisture in. You want it to be damp but not dripping.
- Pick a small stain that is in an inconspicuous place in your house and do a small test patch first. I have never had issues with the paste staining but always make sure you check your own surfaces before going wild.
- Take some of the paste onto the corner of your cloth and scrub your stain out.
- After the stain is gone, give the surface a wipe with a secondary damp cloth that has no paste. If you do not wipe it off, it may leave a white film on your surface.
Excuse the quality of the pictures but this is a before and after of the same spot on my kiddos wall so you can see it easily cleaned off the stains that were present!
The second set of pictures is marker that is all smeared from me trying to clean it with just water on a cloth. The after picture is of the same area with a sticker to help my camera focus. This DIY magic eraser completely cleaned the stain! I was so impressed.
