Who doesn’t want a beautiful smelling house without the nasty and harsh chemicals commercial products bring? I know I do! Between living on a homestead, kids, dogs and farm animals, our house can easily smell a little… musky.
Enter this DIY linen spray! This recipe can be as simple as throwing everything into a bottle and spritzing your couch! I will share more on this below.
Sometimes I can feel a little defeated when it comes to keeping my house clean and smelling fresh. It can feel like no matter how hard I work, there is always a hint of odour. Not anymore! This DIY linen spray makes the house smell delightful without needing to use a commercial cleaner.

The main reason you should make your own linen spray
Have you ever noticed your lungs burning when you used a spray or cleaning product you bought from the store? That is because most of the fragrances you buy contain “fragrance” which is a blanket term for scent that they do not legally have to disclose. Fragrances can also be endocrine disruptors and really mess up the reproductive/ endocrine system of kids!
I first started noticing this phenomenon after we cut out the bulk of commercial products and nearly all scented products from our house a few years ago when we noticed one of the kiddos was extremely sensitive.
One of my relatives would come over wearing perfume and others you could smell the fabric softener on them. If they would hold my kiddo, they would hive out, and be awake all night with illness. We ditched fragrances right then and there.
If this sounds similar to you, I would encourage you to make the switch and just see.
A few more reasons you should make your own homemade linen spray
You still get the benefit of a clean smelling house but YOU get to decide the ingredients. If you are worried about time, rest assured this recipe only takes 5 minutes to make and uses ingredients you likely already have on hand.
If you love the smell of lemons and lavender, make that into a spray! If you like cinnamon and vanilla, try that! The combinations are endless.
One final reason I would recommend you trying this linen spray is because it saves you so much money. To make a batch of this spray is only pennies versus over $5.47 (at the time of writing this for the leading brand.)
Materials/ ingredients you need to make this spray
500ml/ 16oz container to hold the spray. I love the look of these amber bottles!
Side note: As much as I love recycling, I would never reuse old cleaning product bottles as you can accidentally produce a lethal gas.
You will also need rubbing alcohol, witch hazel or vodka. (To learn how to make your own infusions, click here)
You will need some essential oils. If you do not want to use essential oils, I have an option available for you down below! Remember, not all essential oils are safe for kids or animals so be mindful if you have critters in your house!
Finally, download some of these adorable labels (they fit Avery sticker paper size 22807) to keep your homemade cleaning products organized!
Let's get on to the recipe!
- 1/3 cup rubbing alcohol, witch hazel or vodka
- 20 drops of essential oils- I would recommend against dark or sticky oils to prevent any mishaps with wrecking your furniture.
- Filtered/ distilled water
Combine all of the ingredients into the spray bottle using a funnel, add the lid and gently invert it to mix.
You are ready to use your spray! Remember, when you are making and using any DIY product, you should always do a small patch test in an inconspicuous area to make sure the spray will not wreck your couches, blankets etc.
How to make linen spray without essential oils
If you do not want to use essential oils, that is totally ok! You can still have a beautiful smelling house. A few posts back I explained how to make extract recipes and that is exactly what you can do here. This method does add 3 weeks to your time but saves you from having to spend money on essential oils.
Basically you combine vodka and whatever item you want to infuse and set them aside for 3 weeks to infuse. The vodka will smell like whatever you infused it with! After you have your infusion, you can use that in place of the rubbing alcohol in the recipe. It would be…
1/3 cup infused alcohol and the rest of the container filled with distilled or filtered water.

What scent combinations are the best?
This is totally dependent on what your personal preferences are as well as your mood but here are a few of my favourites:
Lavender/ mint: 10 drops of each
Anything rose but particularly 1/3 cup vanilla extract and 10-20 drops rose essential oil. Dare I call this a life changing combination- it is that amazing.
Citrus and mint: 10 drops of each
