I wouldn’t say cleaning the toilet is high on my list of enjoyable chores but these DIY toilet bowl cleaner fizzies make it way more tolerable.

Why should you make your own toilet bowl cleaner?
There are so many good reasons you might want to make these toilet bowl fizzies.
- They are so cheap. For pennies, you can make a whole batch of these versus the toilet bowl cleaner you can buy in the store for 4 dollars. Now 4 dollars doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you use it often, it adds up!
- This DIY cleaner is much more environmentally friendly, and therefor more septic friendly too. I know living with a septic tank and field that I have to be way more cautious about what goes down my drains and I feel good about these toilet bowl fizzies versus a commercial product.
- Commercial products can be so toxic! Even the smell can be so potent it hurts your throat. When companies list fragrance on the label, they don’t actually have to disclose what that means. I do not want that anywhere near my family. Going as low toxic as you can is important in todays day and age.
What materials do you need for these toilet fizzies?
- A container to hold your fizzies. I like to use a glass flip top jar like shown above, but you can use whatever you have on hand. Ensure it is clean and there have not been any other cleaning products inside or you could create a lethal reaction.
*Note: If you have hardwater stains, a pumice stone might be necessary. After you clean the hard water stains, you can keep up general maintenance with these toilet fizzies.
- You will also need a silicone ice cube mold or bath bomb molds to create the proper shape.
- A medium sized mixing bowl- I like to use glass or pyrex for this recipe.
- A whisk, measuring cups and spoons

What ingredients do you need for the toilet bowl cleaner balls?
1 cup baking soda
1/4 citric acid
1 Tbsp liquid soap (here is the recipe to make your own)
20-30 drops of essential oils
Let's talk about how to make these cleaning balls!
Whenever you make products that are meant to fizz, there can be a learning curve. I know I have made batches where I over liquify and they erupt over the sides or my containers, so take it from me… go slower than you think you need to. With that being said let’s dive into the steps.
- Combine the citric acid and baking soda into a medium bowl and whisk it together.
- Slowly- (we are talking drops at a time) pour in the liquid soap and stir thoroughly in between. It is normal for this step to fizz but if you go too fast or add too much, your fizzies will start to expand and will overflow the container.
- Finally, add the essential oils (if using) a few drops at a time, similar to the liquid soap, mixing it in thoroughly.
Only add the amount of soap you need to make it clump together (see the pictures below for what it should look like!)
Now you can squish the mix into your ice cube tray or bath bomb mold and let it set for 24 hours before taking them out of the mold and storing them airtight in your flip top container.
How to use these cleaning fizzies
Simply drop one of the flushed toilet fizzies into the toilet, let it sit for 5-30 minutes and then use your toilet brush to scrub your toilet as per usual. Flush and you are ready to go!
If your toilet has significant calcification, you may want to scrub it with a pomice stone prior to using this toilet cleaner and then keep up with regular cleaning with them.
