Why tallow is a skincare powerhouse

If you’ve never used tallow before, you might be surprised to learn it was once a skincare staple — and for good reason. Tallow, rendered from beef fat (ideally from grass-fed cows), is rich in skin-friendly nutrients like vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as conjugated linoleic acid and omega-3s. But what truly sets it apart is how bioavailable it is — meaning it absorbs easily and works with your skin, not against it.

Unlike water-based lotions that often contain synthetic preservatives, fillers, and fragrance, tallow is a whole-food fat that closely mimics our skin’s natural sebum. That means it:

  • Deeply moisturizes without clogging pores

  • Supports the skin barrier

  • Helps calm dry, irritated, or sensitive skin

It’s especially perfect for dry fall and winter months when skin needs extra TLC.

💡 Pro tip: When combined with a gentle exfoliant like sugar, tallow doesn’t just sit on the skin — it melts in to leave you glowing, soft, and hydrated.

Why you will love this tallow sugar scrub

This isn’t your average fall-themed body product. Our Pumpkin Spice Tallow Sugar Scrub is more than just seasonal — it’s a functional skincare staple that blends exfoliation with deep nourishment in one decadent step.

✨ Here’s why it’s a fall favorite:

  • Gently exfoliates dry, flaky skin
The fine sugar crystals buff away dullness without being too harsh, making it perfect for dry elbows, knees, hands, and anywhere your skin needs a refresh.

  • Deeply moisturizes with nutrient-rich tallow
As you scrub, the tallow begins to melt into the skin, delivering lasting hydration and locking in moisture — no greasy residue, just silky-soft skin.

  • Smells like a cozy autumn hug
We use a carefully balanced blend of warm spices (think cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg) with subtle pumpkin notes. It’s like fall in a jar — no artificial fragrance here.

  • Multi-use magic
Use it as a body scrub, hand polish, or even a pre-shave treatment for ultra-smooth skin. It’s a spa-like experience right in your bathroom.

Common tallow mistakes (and how to correct them!)

Tallow is an amazing ingredient — but let’s be honest, working with it (or even using it) isn’t always intuitive, especially if you’re new to natural skincare. Whether you’ve tried making your own tallow balm or purchased one and didn’t love the texture or results, you’re not alone.

Here are a few mistakes people often make with tallow skincare:

🧂 1. Using too much at once

Tallow is incredibly rich — a little goes a long way. Overapplying can leave your skin feeling greasy instead of hydrated.

🧁 2. Not blending it properly

When DIYing, incorrect whipping or melting can lead to a gritty or uneven texture that’s not pleasant to use.

🧊 3. Storing it wrong

Because tallow is a natural fat, storing it in a warm or humid environment can affect its shelf life and stability.

😬 4. Applying it on dry skin

Tallow works best when applied to damp skin, helping it absorb more effectively and lock in hydration.

💡 5. Expecting “lotion-like” results

Tallow is different from commercial products — and that’s a good thing! But it does take some adjustment and technique to get the best results.

Materials you need

Hand Mixer: You don’t necessarily need a hand mixer but it make the scrub so light and fluffy!

Spatulas: To scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix the oils as they melt

Kitchen scale: To weight all of the ingredients. You can get away with a measuring cup as well but a cheapie scale is perfect!

Mixing bowls- stainless steel: I prefer stainless steel overall as it doesn’t shatter if it gets too hot (I have shattered bowls before…😬

Mason Jars: To store your final sugar scrub. This also gives it such a cute and rustic look!

Sugar scrub ingredients

1 part (50 grams) pumpkin spice infused tallow (Learn how to make that here.)

1 part (50 grams) carrier oil

2-2.5 parts of the total weight of the oils (200-250 grams) The amount of sugar you use will largely be dependent on the climate you live in. If you live in a warm climate, go with the higher amount, if you live in a cooler climate you can do less.

How to make the sugar scrub

  1. Weigh out the tallow and carrier oil in a heat proof bowl.
  2. If you want to infuse your oils, add them to the tallow mixture here (see the pumpkin spice tallow infusion post for specific amounts.)
  3. Place the bowl on a double boiler (a pot filled with a few inches of water works great!)
  4. Allow the oils and tallow to melt together and then carefully take it off the heat. (Use oven mitts- it is hot!) If you are infusing spices, strain them out here.
  5. Place it directly into the fridge (this helps prevent grittiness.)
  6. Once it is all hardened, use a hand mixer to whip it up until it is light and fluffy.
  7. Place the bowl on the scale and add 1/3 the sugar. You can use whatever sugar you like!
  8. Whip it up again with the hand mixer. Add another 1/3 of the sugar and mix and finally add the rest of the sugar.
  9. Scoop it into an airtight container and you are ready to use!

How to use the spiced sugar scrub

Using the Pumpkin Spice Tallow Sugar Scrub is simple, but there are a few tips to make sure you get the most out of every cozy scoop.

Step-by-step:

  1. Start with damp skin
Use the scrub in the shower or bath when your skin is warm and slightly wet. This helps the tallow melt and absorb more easily.

  2. Scoop a small amount
A little goes a long way — about a quarter-sized scoop is enough for both arms or legs.

  3. Massage gently in circular motions
Focus on dry, rough areas like elbows, knees, feet, and hands. Let the sugar exfoliate while the tallow begins to melt into your skin.

  4. Rinse with warm water
You’ll feel the sugar wash away, leaving behind a nourishing layer of tallow. No need to scrub it off — let it sink in!

  5. Pat dry — don’t wipe it all off
Lightly pat your skin dry with a towel, allowing the tallow to stay and do its work.
