Sharing is Caring...
Tallow is all the rage these days and for very good reason! Tallow is a wonderful moisturizer that is completely natural. It is something I feel good about putting on my kiddos and myself. All of the ingredients in this pumpkin spice tallow lip balm recipe are completely safe to eat so it is great for kids and adults alike! (If you are using it on kiddos, maybe skip all the spices and essential oils.)

This pumpkin spice tallow lip balm is spicy and sweet all at the same time. It glides on and leaves a glossy sheen. If you have tried other tallow lip balm recipes and been disappointed, I hope to change that with this amazing recipe!

What makes this lip balm different?
Most tallow lip balm recipes are very hard and pull when you use them. It took me a long time to sort out a ratio that felt good to use and stayed solid, even in warm temperatures. The tallow and the beeswax are solid at room temperature making them the perfect base but then we add a liquid carrier oil to add extra skin- loving benefits and that glide.
What if I don't know how to render my own tallow?
That is totally fine! There are a few options.
- You can buy pre rendered tallow from amazon (I did see that Costco has started carrying it too!) The downside to this is that you never know where the tallow came from and how it was rendered. I have found a lot of store bought tallow has quite a strong “beefy” smell to it.
- You can learn how to render your own! It is so much easier than you think (especially when you have a step by step guide like this one!)
I have also put together a troubleshooting guide that covers all of the mistakes people when they first start rendering their tallow so you can avoid them and make creamy, odourless tallow! Check it out below. 🙂

Materials needed
Whenever you are embarking on the journey of making your own skincare, there are a few materials that you absolutely need or that make your life so much easier if you have them. The list is fairly short so let’s get into it!
- A kitchen scale: Whether you are making lip balm. tallow whip or trying your hand at soap, a kitchen scale can make clean up so much simpler. You don’t have to dirty any extra dishes and you get precise measurements. I have a cheapie scale and it has served me so well!
- Heat proof bowls: I used to use pyrex or metal bowls but now I stick to metal (I had a pyrex bowl break… don’t make my mistake!)
- A spatula: To scrape all of the goodness out of your bowl. Bonus! This also helps save time on clean up.
The tallow Lip Balm Recipe
All you need are 3 simple ingredients!
15 grams of pumpkin spice infused tallow
5 grams carrier oil (olive, castor, jojoba, sweet almond oil)

How to make tallow lip balm
This is a very small batch of lip balm so it melts very fast, but it also hardens very fast! Keep that in mind as we move forward.
- Combine the tallow, carrier oil and beeswax in a small heat proof bowl.
- Place it on a double boiler taking care to not get any water into your product (it will spoil very quickly.)
- Once it is all melted down, allow it to cool for a minute or 2 (until the bowl is handleable.)
- Using a funnel or a very steady hand, carefully pour the lip balm base into your tubes. You may need to remelt it a few times. I’m not going to lie… this part can be tricky. Keep at it!
- Allow them to fully harden (in the fridge if you are in a hurry.) Wipe the tubes with a paper towel and then add the cap.
- Add a label and it is ready to use!

What should I make next?
If you are just new to working with tallow (or even if you are not!) your next project should definitely be a whipped tallow balm. It is simple and feels like a dream. Honestly, tallow whip is what got me into tallow in the first place and it is the ONLY thing that helped heal my kiddos skin (despite so many other products.)
