If you’ve ever tried DIY skincare or been curious about it but you are worried that it will make sensitive or eczema prone skin worse, you are not alone.

When I first started making my own skincare for my kiddo (who had eczema so bad, we ended up in the hospital for 5 days,) I noticed that most of them:

A) Didn’t do a thing to help their eczema

B) Burned super bad- (which is one of the reasons I started making my own)

C) Seemed to make things worse??

After years (and I mean years) of experimenting and trying, I realized that DIY skincare can in fact make sensitive skin worse and the most important part is making the highest quality base you can, with tallow. This post is going to walk you through why DIY tallow fails for sensitive skin.

Why DIY Tallow Doesn't Always Work

If you’ve tried DIY tallow and didn’t see results, it’s usually not the recipe… it’s the base.

For eczema-prone skin, small details make a big difference. DIY tallow often fails when:

  • The tallow is low quality or poorly rendered

  • Store-bought or Amazon tallow contains hidden irritants

  • “Natural” add-ins trigger sensitive skin

This is why one family swears by tallow while another sees no change at all.

Eczema skin isn’t forgiving. It needs control, not experimentation, starting with where the tallow comes from and how it’s prepared. The only way to 100% guarantee it is done right is to render it yourself.

FREE: The 3 Hidden Triggers Making Eczema & Sensitive Skin Worse

Even when you think you’re doing everything right, your child’s eczema can flare because of hidden triggers in store-bought or “natural” skincare products.

I created a simple, 1-page guide that shows the 3 most common triggers most parents miss, so you can finally take control and protect your child’s skin.

Why Tutorials and Pinterest Recipes Fall Short

First off, I am not here to knock anybody. I just want to give you a clear picture of tallow recipes that you find online through the lense of a Mom, desperately seeking a solution to their child’s eczema or sensitive skin.

With that being said, here is a list of the reasons that online recipes and tutorials are not enough for eczema skin.

  1. All of the recipes assume the base of tallow is safe but buying pre-rendered tallow is a huge gamble. You never know where the suet was sourced, how it was rendered and if there are any additives. If your skin has reacted to a tallow in the past and you have bought the cream or the base tallow, this is likely why.
  2. Some of the recipes are AI generated, and not actually tested by a human that knows what they are doing. AI can be a great tool, but not when it comes to your kiddos skin.
  3. Some recipes call for unsafe ingredients that sound really healing. I am thinking of tallow balms that call for honey with no preservative. This is how you quietly add mold to your skincare without realizing it.

Why the Base Matters More Than the Balm

It’s tempting to think that the right combination of oils, butters, and “healing” ingredients will fix your child’s eczema. But the truth is: if the tallow itself isn’t safe, nothing else matters.

Store-bought or pre-rendered tallow can contain hidden irritants, be improperly rendered, or include additives that trigger flares. Even the best balm recipes can’t overcome a bad base… your child’s skin will still react.

That’s why learning to control the base first is so important. Once the tallow is safe and pure, you can confidently add gentle ingredients that actually help sensitive skin.
