It is a busy weeknight and you need a dinner that doesn’t take hours to make. You plan to grill some chicken and veggies on the BBQ but you have no idea what to pair it with.

Enter this all purpose seasoning rice mix.

This all purpose rice is delicious and goes with almost any main.

all purpose rice mix

This all purpose rice is so tasty and easy. One of the main things I love about rice mixes is that you can prep them in bulk ahead of time and when you need a quick side, you can pull it out and cook it up.

I like to pair this side dish with chicken, beef or pork and a side of grilled veggies. I also like to make a mayo drizzle for the top. This meal is an instant crowd pleaser!

This post is all about all purpose rice mix.

What materials do you need to make this rice mix?

You really don’t need very many materials for this rice mix and most of them are optional as well! The main materials you need are…

A large mason jar (or other airtight storage container)

A small mason jar (or ziploc baggies)

A canning funnel (optional but helps a lot!)

A vacuum sealer to extend the life of all of your dry mixes.

A small saucepan with a clear lid. This is the type of saucepan I use.

How long will this rice mix store?

This recipe should be able to comfortably sit in your pantry for around 6 months if you tighten the seal hand tight.

The main concern with long term storage or dry goods is the food going rancid, stale or getting super clumpy.

To extend the life of your dry goods, you can use a vacuum sealer meant for mason jars and that will make this rice mix last for over 1 year.

Can I make this in a rice cooker?

Yes! All you have to do is pour the rice (not the spice blend yet) into your rice cooker, give it a rinse draining most of the water off.

Next add your spice blend to the rice and add 2.5 cups of water, stirring gently to combine.

Cover with the lid and turn on your rice cooker!

The trick to making rice on the stove

I have made rice on the stove so many times after our rice cooker died and every single time, it comes out amazing.

I have made it on an electric and gas stove and again, the method works on both.

This is how you get perfectly fluffy rice on the stove.

Rinse your rice in a small saucepan. I always try to use a pan where the rice and water can come up halfway and has a tight fitting lid.

Drain all the rinsing water and add your 2.5 cups of water into the saucepan. Season with salt or seasoning blends and cover with a clear lid you can see through. This doneness of this recipe is based on the appearance of the rice.

Move the pan to the stove and put it on medium low heat. The most important part of the whole rice cooking experience is to leave the lid alone. Do not touch it under any circumstances.

It should be done after 15-20 minutes. You will know it’s done when there is no more bubbling and the top looks cooked through.

Take it off the heat and allow it to sit for 5 minutes untouched. Fluff with a fork and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups white rice (jasmine, basmati, sushi)

  • 2.5 cups of water

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 2 tsp garlic powder

  • 2 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1 tsp oregano

  • 1/2 tsp pepper

Directions

  • To make the rice mix
  • Add your rice to a quart sized mason jar. I use a canning funnel for ease of use
  • In a small 125 ml mason jar or a small ziploc baggie, add all of the spices and shake to combine.
  • Place the small mason jar or baggie into the quart mason jar with the rice and add the lid. Store in your pantry for up to 6 months.
  • If you want this to last for up to a year or more, you can vacuum seal it with a mason jar vacuum sealer.
  • To cook the rice
  • Empty your rice into a sauce pan that has a tight fitting lid, or into a rice cooker.
  • Rince the rice once and then strain out most of the water. If you can't get it all, that is no problem. Just do your best.
  • Add 2.5 cups of water to your rice, along with the contents of the seasoning mix. Stir to combine.
  • Add the lid onto your pot and place it onto the stove on medium low heat. Do not open the lid at any point!
  • The rice will bubble and boil but do not be tempted to lift the lid. The rice will not cook this way. Let it cook for 15-20 minutes and check through the clear lid if it looks fluffy and the liquid is gone. It will also begin to smell cooked when it is done.
  • Take it off the heat and allow it to sit for an extra 5 minutes and then take the lid off, fluff it with a fork and serve!

Notes

  • You can also cook this rice in a rice cooker. Complete all of the steps listed above but swap in the rice cooker for the saucepan.
  • This rice mix has a hint of saltiness but you can season to taste after the rice is done. If you are low sodium, feel free to leave the salt out completely.
