This homemade coffee scrub will add an invigorating touch to your shower routine!

This sugar scrub recipe is so easy to make and uses a handful of ingredients. You will never want to go back to store bought again!!

The scrubs you can buy in the store smell amazing but can be filled with fragrance oils and other ingredients that may not be the best for your long term health. Aside from the ingredient list, the cost can be outrageous! I have seen scrubs priced at over 30 dollars for 2 ounces!

That is so crazy to me when you can make the same scrub using all natural ingredients for a fraction of the cost. If you are looking to make a plain tallow sugar scrub, stay tuned for that recipe but for now, let’s talk about making a homemade coffee sugar scrub.

This recipe is awesome because it allows you to use up coffee grounds that might otherwise go to waste.

This post is all about how to make a homemade coffee scrub

Supplies you need to make the coffee scrub

Ingredients needed to make the tallow coffee scrub

FRESHLY RENDERED TALLOW (this is the base of the recipe)

*If you do not have access to tallow you could swap it out for any oil or butter you like. I think cocoa butter or  shea butter would be so nice!! Coconut oil is also a great option!

OLIVE OIL

COFFEE GROUNDS(I use spent coffee so I can reduce the amount of waste I produce but also so I can get so much more bang for my buck!)

SUGAR (I have had a lot of success with all kinds of sugars so use what you have in your house!)

ESSENTIAL OILS (totally optional but a peppermint coffee sounds very nice in the dead of winter!)

KITCHEN TOWELS (for drying out the coffee grounds)

FINE MESH STRAINER (for sifting the coffee ground and/ or the infusion)

The recipe using tallow

For this recipe we are going to be working in parts. I will break down the proportions I use below.

1/2 part tallow

1/2 part olive oil

1 part coffee ground

1 part sugar

*No more than 1% of the total weight in essential oils. Make sure you always do your own research on safe usage weights for essential oils to avoid any reactions or burns) Check out our disclaimer here.

What this looks like in practice:

55 grams of tallow + 55 grams of olive oil + 110 grams of coffee grounds + 110 grams of sugar

How to dry out coffee grounds

To make the tallow sugar scrub, we will first need some coffee grounds! I use the coffee grounds that I have already used for my morning coffee to eliminate waste! The most important part of making your coffee scrub is making sure your spent coffee is COMPLETELY dried out. If any moisture is left in them, your scrub will mold. No one wants that.

To dry out the coffee grounds, take a clean dishtowel and place some paper towel over it. I find this helps eliminate some staining from the coffee but you can remove the paper towel if you don’t mind your towel with a few potential stains.

Next, spread out the coffee grounds over the towel. Set this aside to dry for 2 days, mixing them around every so often to make sure they dry evenly throughout.

When they are dry, run them through a fine mesh sieve and only use the pieces that were small enough to go through the strainer. Too big of pieces will be painful and remember, these will be going down your drain so you want to make sure you are not clogging any pipes!

Making the tallow scrub

Measure out your tallow and olive oil and add them to a heat safe bowl. Place the bowl on a double boiler (a saucepan with some water works perfectly!) and turn the heat to medium. You want to slowly melt the oils together.

If you want an even stronger scent without the use of essential oils, you can add the dry coffee grounds into this step and let the oils stay on the heat for 4-5 hours to fully infuse. You can also infuse the oils using a crockpot or a dehydrator as outlined in this post.

Once you are happy with the scent, or your oils have fully melted, take the bowl off the heat (very carefully, using oven mitts as it will be HOT!)

Set it aside until it is fully hard. You can place it in the fridge to speed up the process. After it is hard, use a hand mixer to whip it up until it is light and fluffy, 1-2 minutes. Be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl to make sure everything incorporates.

Finally, add the sugar (and coffee if you didn’t infuse it) and whip it up once more. Your scrub is ready to use!

Store it airtight until you are ready to use it. Use it within a few weeks. It will last way longer in the fridge.

coconut sugar scrub

Ingredients needed to make the coconut coffee sugar scrub

1 part coconut oil (I used 2 Tbsp)

2 parts sugar (of any type – brown, white, coconut etc I used 1/4 cup)

2 part of dried out, spent coffee grounds (I used 1/4 cup)

This recipe is so easy to make! All you have to do is combine all of the ingredients together in a bowl and then add them to an airtight container!

A quick note… this will be so thick! But it needs to be that way as the coconut oil can melt and then you have random pockets of coconut oil with no sugar lol.

How to use coffee sugar scrub

The most important thing to rememeber when making your own bath products (besides always doing a patch test, consulting with a doctor and consulting with a plumber to make sure you don’t clog up your pipes) is to make sure you do not get water in your scrub.

If you get water in your scrub, it will go moldy and rancid so fast! To combat this, I like to use a spoon (yes I have a special shower spoon) to scoop up the product to take in the shower with me. This means I only take what I need and the rest stays dry!
