Why you'll love this recipe

Having biscuit mix on your shelf to have fresh biscuits in under 5 minutes (minus cooking time!) is the best! Whenever I am in a pickle for dinner, I will crack open some biscuit mix and pair it with soup, lunch meats or on top of chicken/beef pot pie.

Part of having biscuit mix on your shelf is the benefit of seeing it and knowing it is an option for dinner. If I don’t have the mix in front of me, chances are I will forget they are an option to make lol!

Ingredients for the biscuits

DRY INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups of all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt

WET INGREDIENTS

  • 2/3 cup of tallow or cold butter
  • 1 1/2 cup milk of choice

How to assemble the mix

For the biscuit mix, start with a clean mason jar and add a canning funnel (this is optional but does make it slightly less messy!

Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix them so they are well incorporated. Gently pour into the jar, add a lid and your baking tag. You are ready to store, use or gift!

How to use the biscuit mix

  • Preheat your oven to 425F.
  • Add the dry ingredients to a mixing bowl followed by your wet ingredients (the butter should be added cold and cubed) and mix it until it forms a shaggy dough.
  • Turn it out onto a lightly floured counter and knead 4-5 times.
Flatten the dough with your hands and use a cookie cutter or a glass to cut biscuits. Continue until all of the dough is used up. This mix makes approximately 12 biscuits.
  • Grease a baking tray and add the biscuits. Bake for 12-15 minutes or they are golden brown.
  • Serve warm with butter and enjoy!!

Different recipes to use biscuits in

For breakfast- Make your own breakfast sandwiches on these biscuits with bacon, eggs and cheese.

As a burger bun- If you are tired of using hamburger buns, try making burgers on a biscuit instead

On top of chicken or beef pot pie- Swap the top crust for the raw biscuit mix and bake as usual until they are golden brown… delicious!

Eat it plain- add butter, jam or whatever toppings you love for a warm, buttery treat.

Use it for sandwiches- by adding cold cuts, veggies and cheese

Variations and add ins

All of these variations can be added to the dough right before you make the biscuits and should not be added to your stored dry mix. It will go rancid and moldy.

  • Cheddar biscuits- Grate some cheddar cheese into the dry ingredients (1/2-3/4 of a cup should be good) right before you make the biscuits.
  • Herb biscuits- Add fresh (or dried) herbs to the dry portion of your ingredients before you make them. You could choose to make an Italian bread with thyme, basil, oregano. A greek bread with garlic, onion, dill and oregano.
  • Sweet version- (add sugar + cinnamon)

Storage and shelf life

Dry mixes can last for 6 months on the shelf comfortably but you can extend the shelf life if you vacuum seal the jar and add an oxygen absorber. You can also throw the jar of mix in the freezer which will extend the shelf life to over a year.
