5 DIY Skincare Recipes for Glowy Skin

DIY skincare recipes

Sharing is Caring… Pinterest Facebook Reddit X Email If you want to start making DIY skincare recipes, these 5 recipes are the perfect place to start. I am a huge advocate of using tallow in skin care products as I have seen what it can do. Tallow products have never burned my kiddos skin (and they get horrific eczema.) These 5 skin care recipes have completely transformed mine and my families skin. We use the soap for our hands, as body wash and even sometimes a shampoo! We solely use the deodorant for a non toxic option that keeps us stink free all day. If you are ready to start on your own natural skincare journey, these recipes are the best place to start! Thank you for your support!  Table of Contents Whipped Tallow Lotion Ah tallow lotion. The recipe that started it all for me. If you have been around the blog for a while, you would know that this tallow whip is what got me started on my tallow skin care journey. My kiddo has struggled with horrific eczema (i’m talking send you to the hospital kind of eczema) since they were born and all of the lotions and creams we tried, burned their skin horribly. If you have broken skin or eczema, you know that burning just aggravates the issue, it does not heal it and putting painful cream on a kiddo feels awful. I was so sick of pursuing these options that didn’t work so I went out on a limb and tried tallow balm. It was like a light switch flipped on. There was 0 burning and within days the eczema patches were healing. It felt like a miracle. If you have been debating trying out a tallow whip or balm, I encourage you to give it a go. Learn how to make it HERE.  Tallow Deodorant (No Baking Soda) If you are on the “natural deodorants don’t work” train, I urge you to give this deodorant recipe a try. I have used all of the deodorants and I always end up with a hint of musk by 3:00. I played around with formulas for a long long time and I finally settled on one that actually works. The best part? It contains no baking soda. Baking soda can be a severe underarm irritant so leaving it out allows you to use this deodorant long term. The active ingredient is zinc oxide and that is how you keep the smell away.  To make this tallow deodorant, click HERE.  Tallow Lip Balm If dry lips aren’t your thing, you need this tallow lip balm in your life. It glides on, feels amazing and keeps your lips kissable all day long.  This lip balm recipe is easy to customize and uses only a handful of ingredients so you can make a big batch and throw them into all of your bags to keep on the go, or give them away to friends and family.  I love this tallow lip balm!  To learn how to make it, click HERE.  Tallow Face Cream This tallow face cream is soft, luxurious and totally customizable. If you have been interested in making your own tallow face cream, this face cream recipe is the perfect place to start. This face cream recipe can be made to benefit oily skin, dry skin or a combination. You can add different essential oils that each have unique properties depending on what benefits you want to focus on. You can make this tallow face cream with only 2 ingredients in a balm or a whipped form. I love using this whip after a shower to lock in all of the moisture. This recipe comes with a video so you can learn exactly how to make it without the stress. This tallow soap bar is so smooth and can be used as a hand soap, body wash or even a shampoo bar. Natural Deodorant Recipe With Tallow (This Actually Works!)

natural deodorant recipe

Natural deodorant gets a bad rap and that is mostly for good reason. A lot of products use baking soda (which works well to deodorize) but can be too harsh on the delicate skin beneath your pits.  Other recipes don’t fully take away the smell (although regular deodorants don’t always work either!) What’s a girl to do? Enter this natural deodorant recipe. It works just as well as store bought varieties, without any chemicals and with a fraction of the cost.  This recipe uses zinc oxide powder instead of baking soda which is gentle on your skin but actually removes odour.  Let’s dive in to the natural deodorant recipe. Why should I use natural deodorant? If you are here, that tells me you likely know about the dangers of traditional deodorant but in case you don’t, here are a few.  Aluminum has been linked to Alzheimers and breast cancer and while it may not have deep studies, I would rather not take any risks with mine or my families health. Secondly, fragrances and perfumes can be endocrine disrupters (which means they mess with a variety of your hormones) and hormones aren’t just limited to the few that we hear about. Our whole body runs on hormones so keeping those in check is of the utmost importance.  Thirdly, fragrances (specifically the phthalates) are known to be carcinogenic (linked to cancers) so switching to natural makes sense.  ✅ Yes! I Want the Free Guide! Loading… Thank you! Check your email for a link to the PDF download What materials do I need to make my own deodorant? The materials needed are quite simple!  A heat safe mixing bowl A double boiler (or a pot filled with water!) A container to store your deodorant (I use little pots or mason jars) Here is a link to some deodorant sticks. (I haven’t tried them but these ones have the best reviews!) What ingredients do I need to make this? You need a handful of ingredients to make this deodorant but these are staples for natural skin care so you will get a lot of use from them!  60 grams Coconut Oil  30 grams Olive Oil  15 grams Tallow (infused or not) 30 grams Beeswax 3 grams or 7 capsules of Vitamin E oil 1 tbsp Non nano zinc oxide No more than 1% the total weight of Essential oils (optional) What the calculation looks like for essential oils:  The total weight of all of the oils and butters is 138 grams. Take 138 and multiply it by 1%. 138g X 1%= 1.38 grams total of essential oils {Related: How to make infused tallow} The deodorant making process The process to make your deodorant is surprisingly simple!  Weigh out your coconut oil, olive oil, tallow and beeswax in a heat safe container. I like to use a 500ml mason jar.  Heat the oils gently on a double boiler or a sauce pan filled halfway up the jar with water.  stirring often until it is all melted down. Carefully remove the mason jar (using oven mitts as it will be HOT!) and set it off to the side to cool for around 5 minutes.  Stir in your zinc powder and mix well to combine. Be careful to do this in a well ventilated area and pour it gently to avoid the powder puffing up!  Add your essential oils if using and give it another stir. Let it settle for around 30 seconds and mix one final time.  Pour into the container of your choosing and  let it cool completely.  Your deodorant is now ready to use!  How do I use natural deodorant? It is important to remember that the smell from under your armpits comes from the bacteria that is present on your skin so removing that is the most important step with any deodorant you use. Plain old soap and water works well for this (remember to use fragrance free, natural soaps like this bar soap!)  Scrub your pits gently with the soap, water and a wash cloth and then pat to dry.  Using your clean fingers, apply a small layer of the deodorant making sure it is all rubbed in and no white streaks remain. This deodorant will leave white marks if it is applied in a thick layer (but they should come out in the wash!) As with anything that goes on your body, do a patch test first to make sure you aren’t sensitive to any of the ingredients and to ensure it won’t stain any of your clothes.  Other posts you may enjoy: How to make the fluffiest tallow whip How to render tallow for skincare How to make infused tallow with herbs More of a visual learner? How to Bake Using Pre Made Baking Mixes

Last week I posted about 5 dry baking mixes that you can make, each under 5 minutes. This week we are going to use those baking mixes and have a baking marathon! If you didn’t get a chance to make those, find the recipes HERE.  1. Granola Bars For today, we are going to start with the granola bars as those take the longest to set in the fridge. Start by adding 1.5 cups of peanut butter (or any nut/seed butter will do) to a saucepan and then add in 3/4 cup of maple syrup or honey. Melt this together over low heat while you pour the contents of the dry granola bar mix into a large bowl. Once the peanut butter h mixture has melted together, pour it on top of the granola, keeping in mind that if you use it immediately, the chocolate chips will melt. This is personal preference. If you prefer chunks, wait until the peanut butter mixture cools off slightly.  Mix it all together well and then pour it into a 9×13 baking dish lined with parchment paper or greased heavily. Use the back of a measuring cup or your fingers to press the mixture firmly into the tray, ensuring everything is very compacted.  2. Brownies Place it into the fridge until you are ready to cut and store.   Next, preheat your oven to 325 degrees F while you get started on the brownie mix. Pour the contents of the dry mix into a bowl and then add 2 full eggs and 1 yolk (I crack these separately in case there is anything funky in them.) Add 1/3 cup of vegetable oil and 5 tbsp of melted butter and 1 tsp vanilla. Mix it all together and then pour it into a greased baking dish. I use a round cake pan as that is what I have. No one has ever complained about the shape of their brownies but feel free to use a 9×9 square dish! Bake it in the oven for 30 minutes and then let it cool on the counter. When you pull them out, bump up the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. These still look gooey when you pull them out but firm up as time progresses.  Let them cool completely until slicing and storing. 3. Apple Spice Bread To a large bowl, add 1.5 cups of applesauce, 6 tbsp melted butter, 2 eggs and 1 tsp vanilla extract. Mix to combine. You can use a hand mixer or whisk by hand. When it is all combined, grease a circular cake pan super well and pour in the batter. Bake for 40 minutes and check it. If a toothpick doesn’t come out clean, bake for an additional 5 minutes and then check again. Mine takes between 45-50 minutes. Let it cool completely before slicing. While they are baking, start on the waffles.     4. Waffles Preheat your waffle iron and then add 1.5 cups of milk, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1/4 cup melted coconut oil or butter and 1 tsp vanilla to a large mixing bowl. Add the dry mix and stir to combine. Add 1/4 cup of batter to your waffle iron (spraying if your iron sticks) and let it cook until the steam stops or your iron tells you it is done. Continue until your waffle batter is done, cooling on a wire rack if you have one. I do not and just use a plate, trying to keep most of the waffle off of the plate. By this time, your apple bread should be done and you can bump up the temperature of the oven to 400 degrees F. 5. Double Chocolate Muffins  Add 1 and 1/3 cups of buttermilk (I make my own with 1 1/3 cups milk and 1 tbsp lemon juice) 2 eggs, 6 tbsp melted butter and 1  1/2 tsp vanilla to a bowl. Add in your double chocolate muffin mix and stir to combine. Grease 18 muffin tins and scoop approximately 1/4 cup of mix into each tin. Bake for 16- 18 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.  Let them cool for 2-5 minutes in the muffin tin and then flip them upside down out of their tins to finish cooling.  By this time, your brownies should be cool enough to slice. Slice them up and then store them in an airtight container in the fridge up to 4 days or the freezer for up to 3 months. If you plan to store them longer, I recommend using a vacuum sealer.  You should now be able to slice up the granola bars. If you used parchment paper, lift them out and slice them up. I store them individually wrapped in parchment and then in an airtight container. Again, 4 dish days in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer.  Finish this baking day up by placing the waffles in a single layer in a ziplock bag or by flash freezing in a single layer on a baking tray and then storing in a freezer bag or container. Do the same with the muffins. The muffins take approximately 30 minutes to thaw so they would be perfect in a lunch box straight from the freezer.  Thank you for reading!!  https://youtu.be/6UQso6EQPd0

Easy Snacks to Make at Home From Scratch

Do you find yourself eating more packaged snacks than you would like? They cost so much money and aren’t great for you but man are they convenient! I am hoping that by showing you the recipes I make for my family, you will gain some inspiration for your own family! Most of these recipes are so easy with under 5 minutes of hands on time. Next week I will show you how you can prep them ahead of time (the baking mixes.) Watch the video below to see how I make these recipes!  https://youtu.be/z5z4Im57FHY WAFFLES INGREDIENTS: ~1.5 Cups of Milk (this can be cow, oat, almond- whatever you’d like!) ~2 Tsp Apple Cider Vinegar or Lemon Juice ~1/4 Cup Melted Butter (I use vegan butter as we have a dairy allergy) ~1 Tbsp Sugar (I like brown sugar but you can use white sugar, honey or maple syrup) ~1 Tsp Vanilla Extract (optional- if you are planning a savoury waffle, leave this out) ~1/2 Tsp Salt ~2 Cups of Flour (I use half white and half whole wheat most of the time) ~1 Tbsp Baking Powder INSTRUCTIONS: Start by preheating your waffle iron and then start the batter. Most blogs will tell you to do this in separate steps but I find that over complicates things and makes recipes less accessible. I generally add all wet ingredients into the bowl first and then add the dry but honestly, everything mixes together and I have had a lot of success combining everything at once.  If you want to be technical, I would start with the milk and vinegar/ lemon juice. Let that sit for roughly 5 minutes.  After, add all of the other ingredients and mix it until it is just combined.  Grease your waffle iron and add 1/4 cup of batter to each side. Let it cook until the light turns off or it stops steaming.  Let them cool on a wire rack (if you have one,) or a plate if you don’t. Enjoy hot or let them cool completely, freeze them flat and then store in an airtight container in the freezer.  To reheat, toss them in the toaster until hot and crispy! Enjoy! Here is a link to a waffle iron that is very similar to mine. We have loved and used it for almost a decade!  Homemade Granola Bars INGREDIENTS: ~4 Cups of Rolled Oats ~1 + 1/2  Cups Shredded Coconut, Dried Fruit, Nuts or Seeds ~1/2  Cups Chocolate Chunks or Chocolate Chips  ~1 Tbsp Vanilla ~ Pinch of Salt (around 1/2 tsp) ~ 1 + 1/2 Cups of Peanut Butter or Seed Butter  ~1+ 1/4 Cups of Honey or Maple Syrup (I lower this to 3/4 of a cup if I used sweetened peanut butter- I know… We are working on the switch to all natural nut butter) ~1/4 Cups Coconut Oil or Melted Butter INSTRUCTIONS: Melt the nut or seed butter in a double boiler or in the microwave for 30 seconds.  Add the honey or maple syrup and stir to combine.  Add all of the other ingredients and then squish them down into a greased baking tray. This fills up a 9×13 dish pretty well. I use damp fingers to squish it down or the back of a greased measuring cup. You want it to be super compact so it holds together.  Cover with a cloth or tin foil and place in the fridge until it is hard (around 4 hours.) It is delicious before but doesn’t hold up when cut.  Store the bars in an airtight container in the fridge to use within 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months (longer if you vacuum seal them! HERE is a link to the vacuum sealer I love!  Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins INGREDIENTS: ~3 Ripe Bananas (medium to large in size) ~1 Cup Milk (I use oat milk but any milk will work) ~2 Tsp Apple Cider Vinegar or Lemon Juice ~1/3 Cup Melted Butter or oil ~1 Cup Brown Sugar (white sugar will also work) ~2 Tsp Vanilla ~1/2 Tsp Salt ~1 Tbsp Baking Powder ~2 1/4 Cups Flour (I use a mix of white and whole wheat when I can!) ~1/2- 3/4 Cup Chocolate Chips (follow your heart here!) INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat the oven to 400F. Mash the banana. A fork works but I have found a hand mixer leads to silky smooth banana which is the key to a delicious muffin. Add all of the wet ingredients to the banana (milk, butter or oil, vinegar or lemon juice, vanilla) and mix to combine. Add all of the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Try to stop mixing when the flour is incorporated. Some lumps are fine!   Spray muffin tins (I find this is enough batter for 24 muffins so I need 4 trays) and fill them with batter until they are almost full. Bake for 20- 25 minutes or until they are golden brown and almost burning on the bottom (this is the second trick to an amazing muffin.) Pull them out of the oven and let them cool for about 3-5 minutes in the muffin tin and then flip them upsidedown to cool the rest of the way on a cutting board, wire rack or your clean counter. This is the final key to make these crispy on the outside. Everyone who has tried these muffins devours them!  Store them in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 3 days or in your freezer up to 3 months. Pull them out and let them thaw in your lunch box or on the counter until you are ready to eat. They don’t take long to defrost! Enjoy! Homemade Granola INGREDIENTS: ~1/2 Cup Butter ~1/2 Cup Maple Syrup (you could use honey instead) ~1 1/2 Cups Rolled Oats ~1/2 Cup Shredded Coconut 1/2 Cup Pumpkin Seeds (or nuts/ seeds of choice) 1/2 Tsp Salt 1 Tsp Vanilla INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350F Combine butter and

Old School Ambrosia Salad Recipe

Ambrosia salad

Do you remember the fluffy “salad” recipe your Mom used to make for company? The one that had canned fruit and coconut? Us too! We had to recreate this recipe using upgraded (but still nostalgic) ingredients. Ingredients: 500ml dairy free or regular whipping cream 2 Tbsp Sugar (more or less to taste) 1 can of mandarin oranges 1/2 can of pineapple (more or less to taste) 2-3 Tbsp Unsweetened Shredded Coconut 1 Cup mini marshmallows Instructions: Whip up the cream, vanilla and sugar with a hand or stand mixer until stiff peaks form. Fold in the fruit, coconut and marshmallows and serve!  *It will last covered in the fridge for up to 3 days if you want to make it ahead. (The marshmallows may get soft in that times you can leave them out until you serve. Either way it is still delicious!) Let us know what you think in the comments below!!
